I came across a headline on a study that went something like this "can you rapidly lose body fat while increasing lean mass on a calorie restricted diet?" It was a study out of McMasters University in Hamilton Canada. The participants targeted a high amount of protein each day and did a vigorous workout. I checked the macro composition of their food intake, and they were running close to 40% of calories from protein. I decided to give it a try. I did some math and set myself up to hit a protein target not going below 40% of my calories from protein. The results were remarkable. In the first week I saw a fair amount of fat loss, and at four weeks, I had shed a little over 20 lbs. My waist was free from the fat I wanted to lose, and from all appearances, I maintained my muscle mass. I wanted to share this method with my gym members, so I put together a presentation that included the formulas to calculate foods values to hit the protein target and the 40% of calories from protein. Unfortunately, it was to difficult for folks to implement. To shorten the story, I built an app that helps people accurately hit their macro nutrient targets that is simple to use. I am a firm believer that your macro nutrient composition matters. After all, we eat calories every day, and those calories form some sort of macro nutrient composition of protein, fat, and carbohydrate. Our body composition reflects those macros. If we want to change the amount of fat mass we carry, or want to gain muscle mass, we need to consume the right macro composition that will work for us to get the job done.
